Stanford Support Team

We provide managerial, editorial, and technical support for the five projects. Our activities during Year 1 (March '97 through May '98):

  • Procurement of project resources (workstations, servers, software)
  • Site development process by brainstorming with primary investigators about the purpose, audiences, and data collection/user interaction requirements of each site
  • Development of on-line communications mechanisms, principally listservs and threaded e-mail discussion groups for project participants
  • Creation of help documentation for media conversion and metadata
  • Consultation with staff in project libraries, principally Stanford and UC Berkeley, about the relationship of STIM to the general state of 'digital library' developments
  • Development of a distributed data model and general computing infraststructure

Functionality at the End of Year 1:
  • User identification and login
  • User form submission for surveys
  • User submission of digital documents (e.g., text files, word processing files, image files)
  • Web-based threaded discussion groups
  • Web-based chat rooms
  • Document search capabilities within and across sites

Activities in Year 2 (May '98 to March '99):
  • Support of primary investigators in the enrichment of the archival nature of their sites
  • Support of primary investigators in site design and site design issues
  • Development of "second phase" functionality for their user communities on the basis of data gathered/successful community interactions
  • Development of reporting/data display capabilities as required for each site both internal (for use by primary investigators) and external (as part of the site) use
  • Support of primary investigators in the planning for post-project site maintenance
  • Creation of metadata for each web site using the Dublin Core, a set of 15 metadata elements specifically developed to support web-based cataloging.
