MouseSite

Tim Lenoir
Tim Lenoir's MouseSite explores the history of the human computer interaction in relation to the development of matter of course features of today's computers such as multiple windows, hypertext, networked collaborative workspaces, and the mouse.

The site is centered around one of the pioneers in this field, Douglas C. Engelbart and his group of engineers and computer scientists working at the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California, between 1959 and 1970. Engelbart's writings on his pathbraking concept of using computers for 'Augmenting the Human Intellect' from the Engelbart-Papers at Stanford University's Special Collections can be accessed in an on-line electronic archive.

The archive includes also contributions from those who helped Engelbart to realize his vision. Their personal stories, comments on certain events and inventions are gathered electronically through on-line forums and threaded e-mail. The history of the group's work and achievements is based on their own submissions, modified and edited by this group to reflect their experience and interpretations.

The final outcome of this website constitutes a collaborative history of human computer interaction which uses the computer in a way Engelbart envisioned it: a bootstrapping effort of documenting a community experience.
